Leveraging the Stretchiness of Knitted Fabrics
Knitted fabrics possess excellent elasticity; consequently, during pattern design, one can minimize the use of seams, darts, and panels typically required to create specific garment shapes. Furthermore, knitted fabrics generally do not lend themselves well to shaping techniques involving "pressing-in" or "stretching-out" (ironing manipulation); instead, they rely on the fabric's inherent elasticity-or the judicious application of pleating techniques-to conform to the curves of the human body. Thus, the degree of a fabric's elasticity becomes a critical parameter guiding the pattern design and production process.

 

Generally, the final pattern for woven garments is slightly larger than the surface area required to encase the human body-meaning it incorporates a certain amount of "ease" (allowance) relative to the body's dimensions. In contrast, for knitted garments-depending on the specific fabric structure employed-patterns for highly elastic materials (a characteristic linked to the yarn type and stitch structure) may be designed without any ease allowance. In fact, the pattern dimensions may either match the body's actual girth measurements precisely or, by factoring in the fabric's elasticity coefficient, be reduced to dimensions *smaller* than the body's measurements.

 

Leveraging the Curling Tendency of Knitted Fabrics
The "curling tendency" of knitted fabrics refers to the phenomenon where the fabric edges roll inward; this occurs because the internal stresses within the loops at the fabric's periphery dissipate. This curling tendency is generally considered a drawback of knitted fabrics. It can result in uneven seams or dimensional instability at the garment's edges, ultimately compromising the garment's overall aesthetic appeal and its specified dimensions. However, not all knitted fabrics exhibit this curling tendency; it is typically observed only in specific stitch structures-such as weft plain knits (jersey). For such fabrics, pattern designers can mitigate this issue by incorporating extra seam allowance for hemming, attaching ribbed bands, applying binding trims, or inserting fusible interfacing strips along the garment's edges. In some cases, the curling tendency of certain knitted fabrics is eliminated during the post-finishing treatment process, thereby obviating the need for special adjustments during pattern design.

It is worth noting that many designers, armed with a thorough understanding of fabric properties, can turn this perceived flaw into an advantage. By deliberately harnessing the fabric's curling tendency-for instance, by incorporating it into the pattern design for necklines or cuffs-they can imbue the garment with a distinctive, refreshing aesthetic. This approach is particularly effective in "fully-fashioned" knitting (garments knitted to shape), where the fabric's curling tendency can be utilized to create unique decorative patterns or structural design lines.

 

Addressing the Run-Prone Nature of Knitted Fabrics
Knitted fabrics differ from woven fabrics in both style and inherent characteristics; consequently, the design of garments made from them must not only emphasize the fabrics' strengths but also mitigate their weaknesses. Given that certain knitted fabrics are prone to unraveling, particular care must be taken during pattern design and construction. Designers should avoid employing overly exaggerated design techniques with such fabrics; specifically, they should minimize-or ideally eliminate-the use of darts and style lines, and limit the number of seams to prevent the accidental unraveling of stitches, which would compromise the garment's wearability. Instead, designs should utilize clean, soft lines that harmonize with the inherently soft and body-conforming nature of knitted textiles.
